Ekādaśi & Budhavāra (Wednesday) community

Our vision is to build a community dedicated to practising the Viṣṇu Sahasranāma on Ekādaśi and Wednesdays. Astrologically, these are the days dedicated to the worship of Lord Viṣṇu. Wednesdays are ruled by the graha (planet) Budha, or Mercury. Whether or not you are aware of the placement of Budha in your birth chart, this is a very beneficial practice for everyone. We already have an established Rudram & Śani Vrata group meeting regularly, and this will be another community that is specific for graduates of this program.

Introduction

The Viṣṇu Sahasranāma — a thousand names of Lord Viṣṇu — stands as one of the most revered hymns of the Hindu tradition. Taught by Bhīṣma to Yudhiṣṭhira in the Mahābhārata, it is praised as the supreme path to peace and liberation. Each name is not only an invocation but also a teaching, revealing a unique facet of the Divine. Widely cherished for daily recitation, it is also considered astrologically auspicious, harmonising planetary influences and supporting clarity, strength, and protection in life.

Benefits of Learning the Viṣṇu Sahasranāma

  • Deepening Concentration and Devotion
Immersing in a thousand names of the Divine trains the mind in one-pointedness and steadiness, while cultivating sincere devotion.
  • Immersion in the Divine Form of Viṣṇu
Over fifteen months, the Sahasranāma offers a rare opportunity to dwell on a thousand aspects of Lord Viṣṇu, offering our adoration to the sustaining principle of the universe.
  • Purification through Sound
The precise recitation of this intricate chant refines the Sanskrit sounds in the body and mind. This process of purification is both subtle and transformative. The Viṣṇu Sahasranāma presents aspirated sounds in powerful combinations.
  • Astrological Alignment
Reciting this Sahasranāma is said to harmonise planetary influences, especially those governed by Viṣṇu (Mercury/Budha). It brings clarity, steadiness, and protection during challenging planetary periods.
  • Scriptural Authority
As taught by Bhīṣma in the Mahābhārata as the supreme prayer, learning this chant connects one with a living tradition, deeply rooted in śāstra.
  • Community and Continuity
We aspire to create a community of committed practitioners on astrologically powerful days. (Just as we have an established Śivarātrī & Śani vrata community).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need previous chanting experience to study this course?

It is best if you join this course with some familiarity in Sanskrit and chanting – you don’t need Veda mantra level of knowledge. This is a stotram without svaras, but rhythmic recitation followed for the Anuṣṭup meter. The first class of this course will be an orientation to basic sounds and Sandhi-s (grammar) followed in the recitation. This will be important to attend.

Are the classes recorded, in case I can't make it live.

Yes, all live classes will be recorded and made available in your course area.

Will there be practice resources?

Yes, there will be audio practice resources in half sentence and full sentence for the entire Sahasranāma for focussed practice in between live classes.

Will you teach the meaning?

We will not be spending time on each name – but we will do some excerpts so that the magnificence and spirit of the Sahasranāma can be appreciated. I will focus on prayer value of this chant.

Will you offer this as a live course again in the future?

I am not sure!

Will the course be offered as a self-paced learning module in the future?

We are not sure about this right now.
