Workshop Series: The Meaning of Mantras
First Session – 8 December 2025 (Monday), 16:00–17:30 Brussels time
I am delighted to launch a new series of workshops dedicated to the meanings of mantras, sūktams, and chants. While my regular courses focus on the art of chanting and recitation, these workshops will give us space to turn fully toward the theory—to explore the profound wisdom encoded in the mantras.
This first session will be held online on Monday, 8 December 2025, from 16:00–17:30 (Brussels time).
What we will cover
-
Introduction to the mantra: technical details such as its place in the Veda, seer, and context.
-
Word-by-word meaning and interpretation: drawing from traditional commentaries and, where relevant, simple grammar insights.
-
Other versions and appearances: exploring places in other scriptures where the mantra occurs.
-
Benefits of the practice: what the tradition tells us about the fruits of reciting and reflecting on the mantra.
Objectives
-
To deepen appreciation of mantras as living texts carrying wisdom and guidance.
-
To learn to approach mantras not only as sounds but also as teachings.
-
To see how grammar, structure, and commentarial tradition illuminate meaning.
-
To connect the study of meaning with the practice of devotion and contemplation.
