Medhā Sūktam: The Vedic Hymn to Memory and Intellect
€299,00
Introduction
This live online course offers 5 live classes on Zoom and 4 weekly homework evaluations.
What is memory, and why did the ṛṣis treat it as something to pray for?
The Medhā Sūktam answers by naming memory a goddess. Medhā, the power of memory and higher intellect worshipped as an aspect of Sarasvatī, is invited to arrive, to be delighted in the student, and to remain. What the hymn asks for is far larger than a sharp memory. It asks that harsh and careless speech fall away and that we come to speak the supreme truth. It calls on Indra for strength of mind, on the Aśvins for the health that steadies concentration, on Sarasvatī for intelligence itself. It invokes Medhā as golden-hued and all-pervading, arriving like a fragrance that fills a room before it is named. And it sets the true horizon plainly: favoured by Medhā, one becomes a seer of reality. Memory here is the first step toward realization, not an end in itself.
Drawn from the Mahānārāyaṇa Upaniṣad, this hymn settles the mind, purifies speech, steadies the body, and opens the intelligence by which learning becomes lasting. In this live course we will learn to chant it accurately, following the svara and the phonetic refinements of the Veda Studies system, and we will study the meaning of each verse, so that the hymn becomes both a practice and a living invocation of our own capacity to learn & remember.
